Evolution of my Little Blog

I was just thinking about the evolution of my blog.  At various stages of its life, this blog has had very different focuses...foci...

When I first started blogging, it was honestly as a stepping stone to letting the world know I liked to write.  I blogged mostly about what God was teaching me and the creative side of life.

These posts were written on my original blog. One that no one knew about.  I was writing "publicly" but the public had no idea.

Then my blog became about a new start. A new career, a new blog, a new focus.

Then beginning with this post a whole new focus for my blog emerged.  I started writing about my love for cooking and photography.  I was reading a lot of Pioneer Woman at the time and loved what she did with her blog so I started going down that road.  I think it was the real beginning of my blog.

I mixed in some true Kim with some honest posts about where I was at but it was mostly about my food.  It got to the point that all my friends called it a food blog. To this day people still call it a food blog. ITS NOT A FOOD BLOG.

Somewhere along the way, it just got to be about life.  What I loved, liked, wished for.

In all of this, i was randomly writing reflective posts on what I was learning in the midst of life

I even began using my blog to be the main advertiser of my growing Etsy Shop.

The late spring of this last year I started getting more involved in the blogging world. Joining link ups, entering giveaways, etc.  My blog changed almost drastically. In some ways it was great. I was getting exposure. I was seeing other writing styles, other ways of expressing yourself but i was also getting more readers.

I went from 30 something followers to the 200s in a matter of weeks.

I even got to the point of taking on advertisers & sponsors.  Many days my blog was about the giveaways and the sponsors.  I found it hard to keep up with it and started to lose my voice as a writer.

Once the high of the growth dwindled down, I started reflecting more on who I was as a writer, a blogger, a friend. I am still reflecting on who that is. I am still trying to find out who I am and where I want my blog, my writing to go.  What I love about the blogging community is that I can take my time to figure it out and I don't have to be boxed in to one specific style. My followers will change. My focus will change and that's ok.

How has your blog evolved? Have you found your own niche?  Are still trying to find your voice?

Practice Makes Better

One of my goals for 2013 is to write more creatively.  More specifically "8) Write at least one creative post a week."  So far I have failed at that but its still January so I am not a total failure yet (wink wink).

Now in processing what this means, I have had to decide what a creative post means? I think originally it was more creative writing style like fiction, poetry, etc.  I want to hone those skills more.  I truly think practicing your art will make you a more rounded artist.  If i wait until perfect inspiration comes I will never write.

So, for me, writing at all is a good habit to start. I get so bogged down sometimes by lack of inspiration or the tasks of the day that its just not a priority anymore. So I have decided that writing creatively means writing about anything other than technical things and giveaways or blog hops.  DISCLAIMER - I actually love the technical things, giveaways and blog hops. I seriously enjoy them BUT they are also serious distractions from why i began blogging. I started blogging because I wanted the outlet to write and making it public (though a long process) was necessary for me.  I needed it so that i would no longer be a closet writer and so that i had a community that helped encourage my desires as a writer.  I got caught up in the social politics of blogging but now I want to go back to the reason I started blogging in the first place... to strengthen that writing muscle.

SO What does that mean?  In our staff meeting yesterday our main administrator posed these three questions when communicating to our parishes. So What? Who Cares? & Why Me?  She stated that we should ask these questions when communicating to our masses.  Bringing this over to my blogging, I want to ask these same questions.  I realize that sometimes when I write, I shouldn't consider these questions because it could stifle the writing process but in the same respect I think they force you to look at what you write about and why and really dig deeper into the why.  So I want to take some time, at least once a week, to write. Just write.  They may be creatively written posts or they may be about life but I will write.

Brooke from Covered in Grace listed 30 Days of Blogging Prompts this week.  They were realistic yet simple writing prompts.  I hope to use these to help get that writing muscle going.  I won't do them every day but often enough.

Day 1: List 10 random facts about yourself.
Day 2: Describe 3 legitimate fears you have and describe how they became fears.
Day 3: Describe your relationship with your parents.
Day 4: List 5 things you would tell your 16 year-old self if you could.
Day 5: What are the 5 things that make you happiest right now?
Day 6: What is the hardest thing you have ever experienced?
Day 7: What is your dream job, and why?
Day 8: What are 3 passions you have?
Day 9: List 3 people who have influenced you, and how.
Day 10: Describe your most embarrassing moment.
Day 11: Describe a few of your pet peeves.
Day 12: Describe a typical day in your life.
Day 13: Describe 5 weaknesses you have.
Day 14: Describe 5 strengths you have.
Day 15: If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
Day 16: What are your 5 greatest accomplishments?
Day 17: What is the thing you most wish you were great at?
Day 18: What is the most difficult thing you have had to forgive?
Day 19: If you could live anywhere, where would it be and why?
Day 20: Describe 3 significant memories from your childhood.
Day 21: If you could have 1 superpower, what would it be and what would be the first thing you did with it?
Day 22: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 15 years?
Day 23: List your top 3 hobbies and why you love them.
Day 24: Describe your family dynamic from your childhood vs. your family dynamic now.
Day 25: If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be and what would you eat?
Day 26: What popular notion do you think the world has wrong?
Day 27: What is your favorite part of your body and why?
Day 28: What is your love language?
Day 29: What do you think people misunderstand the most about you?
Day 30: List 5 things you would hope to be remembered for.
Thanks all for taking time out of your day to read my blog!

Have a lovely weekend!

Blog Angel October

I participated again this month in Blog Angels hosted by Rosie over at Craftbotic.  I love the idea, I just struggle with what to do sometimes.  With Blog Angels, you are secretly paired with another blogger and are expected to encourage them in various ways.  This time around we revealed are secret identity early on which made it easier connect without the veil.

I was a paired up with Tabitha from Mommy, Daddy & Mason.  Tabitha seems like such a sweet gal!  I wish I could say I got to know her a little better.  I commented at times on her blog as well as sent some tweets helping promote her giveaways.  I even won one of her giveaways.  I tried reaching out over email but sadly wasn't able to go much further than that. The plan is to keep in touch over November and try and do some more for her.  Its sometimes hard to know how to support someone outside of the obvious.  I do adore Tabitha and her blog and hope to maybe get to know her more after the pressure of Blog Angels is over.

My angel was Aimee from Aimee's World. She is such a sweetheart. We had connected before so when she reached out to me early on, I actually had no idea it was as my blog angel.  She tried reaching out to me but I think I dropped the ball on that one.  I can be really bad a responding to emails and tweets in a timely manner.  You should see my inbox right now :/  I look forward to getting to know Aimee more this next month.

I thought in honor of Tabitha and Aimee, I would post some of their information and even some of my favorite posts from the two of them so you can get to know them better too!  They are great ladies and well worth the time!

Blog Angels October 2012 Series

HAPPY FRIDAY MY FRIENDS

You might have heard the name 'Blog Angels' popping up all over your social media over the last few months and wondered, what ARE they talking about?

Blog Angels is run by Rosie at Craftbotic. Every two months 100 bloggers get the opportunity to help each other out, build friendships and community in the Blogosphere.

The principle is easy. By signing up to be a Blog Angel you are promising to help another blogger for a whole month.  The least you need to do is comment twice a week on their blog, but the possibilities to do more is endless.

In the first two rounds of Blog Angels we had people commenting, guest-posting, giving social media shout outs, new blog design features and warm words of encouragement. Some people swapped addresses and sent little packages. The choices are endless.

So what's the catch? Well, it's all done in secret. For this round, things are changing slightly. Here are all of the details:

1. Sign up is on 15th September. The form you fill in can be found at Rosie's, but also on these sites:

 2. The form is slightly more detailed to help with the matching process. It still takes less than 5 minutes to complete though.

3. The project will start on 1st October and will be secret for the first two weeks. This will allow you to get to know your blogger, build up a relationship and start to act to help them. You would need to as a minimum comment twice a week on their blog.

4. After two weeks you link up a 'reveal' post at Craftbotic on 15th October.

5. You can then communicate with your blogger and give them more specific help, build friendships and develop your role. This is the newest part of the project and came out of a long conversation with the angel regulars.

6. On the 31st October you write a 'reflection' post reviewing your experience of Blog Angels and what you achieved with your Blog Angel.

It's pretty simple. These small steps will help you to be part of growing community of bloggers who care.

On a serious note, there is always a 'drop off' of Blog Angels. Those folks who get busy and disappear. Apart from being incredibly uncool, it is completely unnecessary. Please make sure you have time to help out in October BEFORE signing up. If life gets crazy you just need to email and let Rosie know. Orphaned bloggers can then be reassigned.  In Blog Angels the only thing you are guaranteed is the opportunity to help some-one else.

What an amazing opportunity that is! The first 100 people to sign-up before 25th September will be taking part. We all hope that it will include you!

{Feature Post} KENDRA from A Proverbs 31 Wife

The joy of having sponsors is that you get to know some great people.  Today, I want to introduce you to one of my Large Feature Sponsors, Kendra from A Proverbs 31 Wife.
----------------------

Hello, I'm Kendra and I blog at... wait! where are you going? Don't you want to read the rest of the awesomeness I am typing up for you?

Oh, I get it, guest posts are boring. Yeah, I just went through one of my readers and basically skimmed all the guest posts. Why? Boring! And when you have some one like me, who may or may not suffer from ADHD it's really hard to be interested.
Speaking of ADHD, my husband is diagnosed with ADHD. I'm not, at least not by a Doctor. Know why? I hate Dr.s I tend to argue with them a lot, I even argue with my dentist. No! Floride is very bad for you! Where did you go to school at? Ok, so maybe I am a little nicer than that, but you get the point.
Now where was I? Oh yeah, talking about how I may or may not have ADHD. I think I'm going to blog about it one of these days, maybe even put in a part about how I helped hubby get off of his medicine completely and is now taking natural supplements and doing great.

What do I blog about? Well I try to keep it fun. I even blogged about my cat once. And no, I'm not a crazy cat lady! Speaking of the cat, she's out of food, better go right it on the list.
Ok, now where was I? Oh yeah, something else I blog about? My Jesus. I am a born again believer in Jesus Christ and he is my savior. I enjoy sharing bits of inspiration as I go.
Know what happened when I was a tween? I burnt everything I tried cooking! Now? I am an awesome cook! lol Not to sound like I have a big head or any thing, but hubby is gaining weight, I think that may become a problem!
Oh shoot, what just happened? I meant to type up this nice little post telling you all about my blog and I seem to have gotten off track. That happens a lot. :) But this time I will leave it. If you really want to find out more about my blog, maybe you should just pop on over and see what you can see.
My name is Kendra and I may or may not had ADHD. Oh yeah, and I blog at A Proverbs 31 Wife!

Thanks Kendra, for stopping by and sharing with us!

The War of the Passions: What Do You Write About?

I've been thinking a lot lately about why I blog.  Why any of us blog, really.  But more importantly why do I, Kim McIlrath, blog.  I have had a few "secret" passions in my life including writing.  For the longest time, very very few people knew my love for writing.  Mostly because it was a love/hate relationship.  I loved it but some days I wasn't sure it loved me.  I have a pretty active imagination.  I love to make up stories.  Sometimes I'll do it for the man/woman across from me on the subway. I'll make up a story about them. Who they are. What they do. The event of their day.  Sometimes I will create an alternate life for myself.  Nothing weird, just dream up alternate ways I could have lived this time in my life or done this certain thing.  In my head, I live in a cheesy romantic comedy.  Don't worry, I am very much in reality too.  My dreams are just my escape from that sometimes.

Anyway.  When I started blogging it was kind of my entry into the world of getting out of my head and into the public eye.  I knew at the beginning I had zero followers.  Zero because I told noone.  Then after a while, I'd tell one person. Then maybe another person.  Then maybe I'd connect my blog to my facebook links.  And so on.  I definitely tested the waters.  At first my posts were about what I was learning, what God was teaching me.  Often times it was about venting processing out loud.

Then as I started to think more seriously about writing a book, I started hearing about having an online presence so I started blogging more.  Same content, just more.  I started making more of a presence through tweeting and reading other blogs.  I did that on a very low key basis for way too long because I still wasn't confident in myself or my writing.  The problem with low followers is you don't get feedback.  No one reads it cause no one knows who you are.  I need feedback to grow as a writer.  I actually want it so that I can know what voice is more natural for me.  Its not really about conforming but really knowing your audience and knowing how they relate.

So then as I read friends' blogs and saw their numbers going up, I thought "maybe I should do some of what they are doing."  Things like entering giveaways, commenting, link ups, etc.  Then all of a sudden my numbers were going up and up.  But the problem was my relevant posts were going down.  They were more about other people then my own writing.  Now ok thats not really a problem. I actually LOVE getting to know other people. I love connecting through things like link ups, giveaways and features.  But the writing muscle that I was trying to build was not working.  I couldn't think of anything to write about.  Then soon I realized my creative writing was non existent.

For me its not about compromising.  I don't think I traded one thing for another.  I just lost sight of what one of my goals was and that was to grow as a creative writer.  So now I am trying to learn how to do both.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE the blogging world. I have loved getting to know some amazing people.  I've loved the interaction and the feedback and wouldn't trade that journey for anything.  I just need to learn how to do both.  I need to learn how to put twitter down for a few minutes, not feel the pressure to respond to that email right away or schedule out 7 posts for the week.  Instead, for some of that time, sit down with pen and paper my computer and just write creatively for 30-60 minutes.  Its funny to me how quickly 1 hour can go by when on twitter or blogs.  The entire day can be gone before I know it.

I am excited about writing more for me.  I am excited about remembering some of the reasons I like to write.  I am excited about the gems I will discover as I process out loud and learn from my readers.  Now, lets just hope I put action to the desire.  I give you permission to hold me accountable!

Thanks Friends for reading my blog.  Thank you for reaching out and taking time to get to know me.  I hope that I too will get to know you a little better!

How To Waste an Hour

Source
Do you find yourself wasting time?  I do!  I don't typically work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  I quit my job a year ago to do two things.  Pursue photography and to write.  Since then I did get a job working at my church.  That fills up 2.5 days of my week.

Getting into the blogging world has been amazing and I have truly enjoyed it.  But OH MAN can it consume my day.  I get to reading one blog which leads to a give-a-way which leads to twitter which leads to another blog and well you get my drift.  Before I know it I have spent 2 hours doing nothing I started out to do.  Now I am not saying the blogging world is bad. Its AWESOME but man it can suck up my day.

My vow this week is to give myself a limit.  Unless I am writing my own posts, co-hosting something or being featured, I cannot spend more then 1 hour bouncing from blog to blog.  I am also vowing to schedule our my blog free time. Even scheduling in tweets and replies.  We'll see how it goes.  :/

Getting Caught Up - Living in the Blogging Community

Me and my little blog have been hanging out here for about a year.  I quit my 9-5 a year ago this week to pursue other things, like my writing and photography.  Blogging was such a scary thing for me but I did it and I've truly loved it.  But to be honest, I never really ventured outside of my friends and family.... not really. I really didn't know how.  My knowledge was uber limited.  I started following real-life friends, Kristina (CityCorporatetoSuburbMama) and Courtney (BaxtronLife) and their blogs.  I watched how they'd network, write, etc and was in awe. They hadn't been around as long as I had but they already had so many faithful followers.  I started looking at some of the blogs they were following and began to dream of how I could move forward with my tiny little, eclectic blog.  I am not married and I don't have kids, so this, I felt, limited me in what I could do.  LIES! But I did notice Baby blogs are all the rage.  So where is my niche?  Then I began to realize, the great thing about the blogging world is that we can let our personalities shine.  Whether we are wives, moms, singles, christians, cooks, bakers, photographers, fashionistas or DIYers, we all have a voice that is our own.  We all bring something different to the table. On top of that, we all seem to support each other and our voices.  We celebrate victories, challenges, milestones, etc.  The blogging community is like nothing else!

I have learned so much from the blogging world.  Recipes used to come from 2 sites and now they come from 100s.  DIY projects I always dreamt about, i am seeing lived out in your blogs.  I've been inspired by your photography and your knowledge to learn and teach.

The one thing I have been repeatedly amazed by is how quickly people gain followers.  I notice most of the blogs I follow are less then a year but have anywhere from 100-4000 followers.  I often ask myself how they do it.  I am an introvert and apparently even in the blogging world, where introverts typically thrive :)  I am amazed at how they can network and still maintain their personal integrity.  I often get bogged down in self-imposed expectations that I forget what voice I have, what my true personality is and who I want to be.  These ladies seem to avoid that.  They do what they do seemingly flawlessly.  Its something to aspire to!

So, I am still trying to figure out what my voice is and where I want to go with it.  Daily, there are things I would love to chat about but putting that out there for the world to see is so scary.  Especially when some of those things are so close to people I am close to.  Sometimes, I mask my rants and ravings in the world of fiction writing to protect the innocent.

So all this to say, I am still learning.

I don't quit understand the whole sponsor thing.  How does it work?

What's proper etiquette?

Where do you find the time to get it all done?  I don't have a family and I can't seem to find the time...
How do you mothers/wives do it?

What is your motivation?

What wakes you up in the morning?

Why do you do what you do?

Where did you learn the tricks of blogging, give-a-ways, meet-ups?

How does one get involved in that?

How do you get your name out there?

What are your boundaries with that?

I have lots of questions!

I am curious!

I want to learn!

I would love nothing more then to sit down with you over a cup of coffee and talk about how you did it!

I know that this blog, like so many others will go unseen. But in the hopes that you stop by and you want to share some blogging wisdom with me, I am ready and open to listen and take it all in.

If you want to get to know me and some of what I do visit these posts:

Behind

I have been really bad at posting lately. I'd love to say its because I am busy and just can't get to it, but that's not really true. I am just lazy, unmotivated and lazy.  But fear my faithful followers, I have lots of stuff to post. Mostly recipes but I do have stuff.  I just have to sort through the pictures and fine tune the recipes.  I want to make this more of a priority because I do love it.  I just get so behind on my days off that I end up getting overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to do in order to post.  I love to create so no worries, I haven't stopped trying new things. I just haven't posted... Trying to learn from my other blogger friends and just post even when I am feeling lazy.  Goodness knows I have enough to talk about ;)

I hope you all are doing well and that you'll enjoy the next few posts.
